I got pretty carried away with this one — starting from a torn scrap image of a flower from a photograph I took at my local botanical garden. From that small scrap, I let my imagination take over, creating new flowers and three-dimensional surfaces that grew out in some sort of crazy way! This is a sketchbook made by spraying inks on the pages, then layering encaustic medium over each one. I bound the pages together with a coil. It was a bit tricky, matching each page so they’d align nicely side by side like a diptych. The challenge made the final result even more satisfying. It’s such a rewarding way to combine mixed media and encaustic, letting each page tell part of the story while working together as a whole. Take a look at this close up of this encaustic painting, "Between Light and Breath". It's a hand-altered archival photo bathed in clear and tinted beeswax. Check out the realistic textures I was able to achieve with the wax through layering and carving. I love how this image hovers between capturing that early morning moment of the sun rising up on the horizon - or, alternately setting after a long day of warming the Earth. Although my work is usually lyrical and curvy, I really enjoyed experimenting with the linear, architectural lines in this piece.
