This one began as a photo of the (plastic) flowers on my back porch in the winter. (yes, I love florals and will even celebrate reasonable facsimiles if there's nothing in the garden to photograph at that time of year....hee see). Then I added encaustic and wax accretion, water soluble wax paints by @ceracolors for detail, encaustic stencils and more for this finished painting. This VERY sped up video gives you a sense of the repetitive tiny detailed work involved in on Encaustic photo painting. The fine texture is hardly visible until you catch it in the right light, and then the feather-fine details are revealed - like a beautiful secret gift! People often ask me how we add colour to Encaustic paints. Certainly, raw pigment powder can be added to clear encaustic medium, but it’s hard to fully mix the pigment into the wax and it sometimes leaves sediment in the paint. I like to use professionally milled encaustic wax colours and I have had the pleasure of working with @enkaustikospaints to create three sets of beautiful colors! Here's an in-progress shot of painting using @Ceracolors water soluble wax paint on an Encaustic photograph. I love the beautiful textures that result when the wax paint is added to thick fibre paste, and also how thinly watered paint will crack on the unstable Encaustic surface underneath when it is highly heated. I'll post the next steps I take on this painting – inscribing gold lines into the Encaustic Wax photograph surface! Have you ever seen this tool before? It's called a kitska, and is normally used for painting Ukrainian Easter eggs.
