Hand-altered Photographs

Commercially printed and digital photography open up a world of creative image making opportunities. Shary's photos are transformed by hand (not digitally) using techniques such as colouring, layering, collage, grattage and image transfer. She integrates these photos into mixed media paintings, wood, glass, fabric and three-dimensional surfaces. In this way, Shary merges memory, artistic interpretation and meaning to retell photographic stories and history.

Recent work explores how to create fine art paintings using the wide variety of archival inks and textured papers that are now available for home inkjet printers.
